The Chronology of the Universe of Ethos
and the
Stories Within
Essaux was originally an assassin for the kings of Ancient Ethosium, hired to destroy the rebels that were threatening the government. He was the best fighter in the entire city of Ethosium, efficiant with both espionage and dual-weilding the sister blades, Vendetta and Black Rose. He was defeated, however, by one of the rebels weilding a Shadow's Bane weapon. His failure he accounted to his own conscience, which had remained with him despite his continued attempts to put it down.
2,500 years later, he was given a second chance by Dazar, the leader of the Marauders. Dazar used necromancy to bring Essaux back to life, with the only flaw being that it failed to bring back the one thing that limited Essaux's deadly capabilities: his soul. He was alive, but only bodily. His conscience, his knowledge of good, was destroyed, leaving only his lust for blood.
He rejoiced in this new advantage, believing that this way, he would have no weaknesses. How could someone who didn't ever let others win lose? It was his opening, his redemption. He became something other than human, feasting on carion or raw meat or even human flesh, and killing for the fun of it.
He cared nothing for pain, and his body, now adapted to his conscience-less mind, began to change, allowing him to experience more and more pain. Pain brought joy. Pain brought peace. Pain became what Essaux craved. His pain, the pain of his enemies, the pain of the women he assaulted, pain was life. His habits scared all who he came into contact with, even Dazar himself.
Dazar employed him as his top assassin, sending him to kill Dol' Dominio, Par, and RogueFox, along with as many other members of the League of the Desert as possible. He did his job well, killing many members of the League of the Desert and rampaging throught the League. He brought the peace of pain to all he saw. His only failure was when he sought to kill Par. While he had greatly looked forward to her pain, he was stopped by RogueFox, who managed to just barely force Essaux away using the power of flames. Purifying flames weren't peace, but chaos.
When Essaux returned to the Marauders without their heads, he was not punished. Who can punish someone who cares nothing for pain? When RogueFox and Par attacked the Marauders' base, though, Essuax was killed by RogueFox. This one pain, the pain of feeling the blade of Shadow's Bane against his neck again, was too much for him. He failed, but was happy to have left a world that was filled with Shadow's Bane weapons.
